It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Bath’s annual Christmas market is back for 18 days of festive fun. Even bigger and better than ever, there are 200 chalets spread across Bath’s stunning Georgian streets and squares this year, each selling lovely local and handmade Christmas gifts.
On Wednesday evening I took a sneak peek around the market during the preview night before it officially opened to the public on Thursday morning and, if you’re not already convinced, I’ve put together 5 reasons to visit Bath Christmas Market this year!
1. Get all your Christmas shopping done in one go!
From Christmas tree decorations to beeswax candles, hand-crafted jewellery to cosy knitwear, you’re guaranteed to find something special at the market for all your friends and family.
This year there are approximately 30 more chalets and 60 new stallholders – including my parents who are there for the first time with their business Beyond the Fridge – pop along and say hello to them if you go to the market!
2. Support local and small businesses
Not only will you be able to tick everything off your Christmas list all in one place, you can feel reassured that you’re supporting local businesses at the same time. Over 80% of the stallholders are from Bath and the South West, and nearly all of the products are handmade by the stallholders themselves or in the UK.
Having seen first-hand how much hard work goes into making stock and preparing everything for the market I know how important it is to support small business owners and shopping at the market is a great way to do that.
3. Soak up the Christmassy atmosphere
Bath becomes that bit more magical during the Christmas market. As if Bath’s sights aren’t spectacular enough, the city is even prettier when it sparkles with Christmas decorations.
Each chalet twinkles with lights and a striking Christmas tree glistens outside the Abbey. Plus, there’s plenty of entertainment with cheerful choirs and carols by candlelight, creating a friendly, festive ambience.
4. Feast on all the festive food
With lots of chalets offering artisan food and drink, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to tasty gifts for foodies.
If you’re not full up on free samples then there are street food stalls cooking up tempting treats – it won’t be long before you succumb to the heavenly aromas of spice infused mulled wine and sweet roasted chestnuts!
On a chilly day you can warm up with a hot drink and bite to eat at The Lodge located at the heart of the market in Stall Street.
5. Explore the stunning city of Bath at Christmas
If the market isn’t enough to get you feeling festive, there are plenty of Christmassy things to see and do elsewhere in Bath.
The outdoor ice-rink in Royal Victoria Park is the perfect activity for a crisp winter’s day or, if you’re looking to unwind after the hustle and bustle of the market, you can have a soak under the stars in the naturally warm, mineral-rich waters of Thermae Bath Spa’s open-air pool.
